Plume Supports Communities Affected by Hurricanes

We remain deeply concerned. Many of these communities will take months if not years to recover and rebuild. If you are looking for ways to support relief efforts, we recommend donating to one of the many relief organizations who are already responding to the storm, including those listed below.  We recognize that there are many others also supporting relief efforts – this list is not meant to be exhaustive. World Central Kitchen

Chef José Andrés’ nonprofit global food relief organization World Central Kitchen began serving meals less than 12 hours after the storms hit. They have teams in multiple states serving meals and assessing food needs for local communities. You can donate here.

American Red Cross

Almost 1,400 Red Cross disaster workers have been deployed to help aid in disaster relief, with more on the way. The organization is working with partners to open and support hundreds of shelters for thousands of individuals who have evacuated their homes, and provide meals and supplies to impacted communities. The organization is also encouraging unaffected communities to donate blood, as the storm caused the cancellation of numerous blood drives throughout Georgia and the Carolinas. 

Voice of Florida (Florida)

Voices of Florida, a Black- and queer-led nonprofit focused on reproductive rights, is cooking and serving hot meals in areas affected by Helene and donating meals and supplies locally.

Prism (Tennessee)

Prism, a teen LGBTQIA+ support group for the Tri-cities — the Tennessee regions made up of the cities of Kingsport, Johnson City and Bristol — is gathering essentials like water, nonperishable food and infant items for local donations.

TriPride (Tennessee)

TriPride, organizer of the premiere Pride parade of the Tri-cities area and southwest Virginia, will move all donations received during its TriPride Week 2024 (and all donations made during Pride events) to hurricane relief efforts. Donations will benefit the United Way of East TN Highlands.

Firestorm Books (Asheville, North Carolina)

Firestorm books, a queer feminist collective and bookstore in Asheville, has stayed open to assist in coordinating mutual aid. Following Helene, their staff has acted as an in-person information hub and resource center, with daily meetings to coordinate mutual aid efforts. Posters on water and food distribution, clear roads and locations with cell service are located at the store.

Rural Organizing and Resisting (North Carolina)

Rural Organizing & Resisting (ROAR) is a North Carolina-based mutual aid organization that “works to strengthen connections and respect among all people in our mountain communities by countering systems of oppression through education, outreach, empowerment and mutual aid.” In the wake of the devastation, ROAR is collecting donations of essential supplies and redistributing them to people in impacted communities. They’ve opened a mutual aid hub that runs every day from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Marshall, North Carolina to provide materials like food, water, and other necessary items. They are actively accepting donations of food, medical supplies, generators, oil, and more, as well as volunteers and monetary donations.

Beloved Asheville

As a community-based organization, BeLoved Asheville is focused on providing mutual aid and care to all in the broader Asheville area. Its response to Hurricane Helene has been no different, as volunteers are working to distribute water, food, diapers, baby formula, and other vital supplies to the mountain city. The organization has been posting regular updates on its Instagram page to inform people in the area about where it is offering essential supplies. BeLoved Asheville is also actively searching for volunteers.
