How Do Nonbinary People Wear Makeup? from Jecca Blac

This article is brought to you by a collaboration between Plume and Jecca Blac, a UK-based, vegan, gender-free makeup brand.  Jecca Blac began with educational, safe space lessons for makeup wearers at the very start of their journey with self expression. These lessons presented clients with an opportunity to experiment with makeup for the very first time in an empowering, private, judgment-free setting. Many of the clients to attend these makeup lessons were from the trans and nonbinary community. They came to Jecca Blac’s Founder with requests for concealing beard shadow and developing a contour regime. Because of this, our first ever products to launch were created with transfeminine makeup wearers in mind: folks who wanted to incorporate a simple and effective beard shadow coverage and contouring regime in their day-to-day looks. We consider ourselves experts in the field of meeting the needs of transfeminine makeup wearers, as well as those who want to find new ways to explore their gender by beginning their makeup journey! Today we’re sharing a little more about the multitude of ways nonbinary people celebrate themselves with makeup! As part of this collaboration, Jecca Blac has created an exclusive discount which grants you 15% off any full price items in our collection. Simply add PLUME15 at checkout!

As a gender-free brand, Jecca Blac feels passionate about amplifying the voices of those who exist, identify and celebrate themselves beyond the gender binary. Meet The Enby Diaries! Our series seeks to empower nonbinary makeup wearers while affirming that there is no one way for nonbinary to look in order to be valid.

Episode 1: Irodriel

I am trans enough. You are trans enough. I am nonbinary enough. You are nonbinary enough.

Meet Irodriel (they/them), a dancer and performer currently based in Berlin. Irodriel shares with us an important message of what life is like, liberated from the gender binary. They do this while showing us a statement red winged look incorporating our Red Touch Play Pot, as well as some of their other favorites from our collection.

Our belief at Jecca Blac is that gender exists in society as a social construct. Any one of us is only as limited to it as we believe we are. And with that, makeup should always be seen as gender-free, too!

Episode 2: Sigi

You might think you only feel comfortable in one style. You might think it’s superficial, but the more you explore, the more you understand what makes you feel powerful and confident, the more you will feel at home with yourself. —Sigi Moonlight (he/she/they, depending on context)

Our hope with this series is that everyone can gain an understanding that there’s no one way for nonbinary people to present, and that there is freedom in embracing the masculinity and fluidity that exists within all of us.

Episode 3: Santi

Nonbinary folx have been here since the beginning of time. You can find nonbinary folx in ancient civilizations in so many historical texts. —Santi (he/they)

The world has a lot to learn from nonbinary people. To break the gender binary shouldn’t be seen as a radical act, but in today’s world which is built on binaries, living authentically can feel pretty radical.

As everyone in our series informs us, life is most fulfilling when lived on our own terms and nobody else’s. Whether you wear makeup or not, nonbinary people are an important reminder to each of us that we’re individuals. We should be free to embrace that individuality on our own terms.

Episode 4: Eden

Your femininity and your fluidity can coexist without compromise. —Eden (she/they)

As Eden says, freedom of expression should come without compromise. So when applying makeup and considering a way to apply it that seems more or less nonbinary—please know that if you are nonbinary and you are applying makeup, your way is an entirely nonbinary way to apply it.

Being nonbinary can look like anybody. Embrace the freedom of that, and live and express yourself without the constraints of anybody around you. Enjoy the journey—you’ve got this!
