Trans Journal Series: Home? For The Holidays

Journaling for Trans people -- Holiday Support Edition

The holiday season can bring a mix of emotions, especially for us trans folks. Maybe you’re heading back to a familiar place, navigating tense family dynamics, or creating new traditions with your chosen family. For some, home isn’t where you grew up—it’s where you feel seen and affirmed. And if you’re on (or considering starting) GAHT, that journey adds another layer to the experience. For this month’s Trans Journal Series, we are here to help you reflect, prepare, and stay connected to your truth, no matter what your plans are this season.

Table of Contents

Recalling Holiday Memories

Prompt: Take a moment to think about a holiday memory from when you were younger. What stands out the most? How has your relationship with the holidays evolved as you’ve grown into your identity?

Goal: Reflecting on the past can reveal how far you’ve come and help you understand the roots of your feelings today. It’s okay if those memories are bittersweet—this is about honoring your journey and growth.

What Does ‘Home’ Mean to You?

Prompt: What does ‘home’ really mean for you? Is it a physical place, a feeling, or maybe certain people? How has your understanding of home changed since embracing your trans identity or starting GAHT?

Goal: ‘Home’ isn’t always the place you were raised. For many trans people, it’s where we feel safe and affirmed. Reflecting on this helps you ground yourself in what truly matters.

Preparing for Tough Conversations

Prompt: Think about one difficult topic that might come up with family or friends this holiday season. How would you like to handle it? What boundaries do you need to set to protect your peace?

Goal: We can’t control others, but we can plan how we respond. Preparing for these moments can help you stay centered and make sure you’re looking out for yourself first.

Celebrating Your Chosen Family

Prompt: Who are the people who make you feel seen and loved for who you are? How can you celebrate those connections this season, even if you’re not physically together?

Goal: Your chosen family is a real family. Recognizing the love and support you have—whether from friends, partners, or mentors—can bring warmth and comfort during a season that might otherwise feel isolating.

Facing Estrangement with Compassion

Prompt: If you’re not in touch with your family, what feelings come up for you around the holidays? How can you show yourself some kindness and create space to heal in the midst of it?

Goal: It’s tough to face the holidays without family, and the emotions can be all over the place. But your feelings are real and valid. Taking the time to honor them—without judgment—can be a small yet meaningful step toward healing. It’s okay to feel what you’re feeling, including grief. Give yourself the grace to process these emotions and move through the pain in a gentle way.

Honoring Your Identity During the Holidays

Prompt: How can you honor your trans identity this holiday season, whether you’re celebrating alone, with your chosen family, or navigating time with relatives?

Goal: Staying connected to your truth is powerful. Maybe that means wearing something affirming, taking time for self-care, or sharing a part of your journey with someone you trust.

Navigating Political Tensions

Prompt: Given the current political climate, you might face heated conversations. What strategy can you use to protect your well-being in those moments?

Goal: Engaging in a political conversation can be a powerful way to address issues important to you, but remember: you don’t have to fight every battle. Sometimes, the best thing you can do for yourself is step back. Whether setting a boundary, changing the subject, or having a plan to exit, trust yourself to do what feels right in the moment. Protecting your energy is an act of self-respect.

Celebrating Your Wins—Big and Small

Prompt: Think about something you’ve accomplished recently, no matter how small it might seem. It could be something personal, like sticking to a new routine or even just getting through a tough week. How can you celebrate that win this season, and why does it matter to you?

Goal: Your journey deserves recognition. Whether it’s a milestone on GAHT, setting a boundary, or just getting through a tough day, taking time to acknowledge your strength can be incredibly affirming.

Creating Your Own Traditions

Prompt: If traditional holiday customs don’t feel right for you, what new traditions could you create that align with your identity and values?

Goal: The holidays don’t have to follow a script. Maybe it’s a self-care ritual, a gathering with friends, or a quiet day doing something you love. You get to decide what feels meaningful.

Dreaming of Future Holidays

Prompt: Picture your ideal holiday season five years from now. Where are you? Who are you with? How do you feel?

Goal: Visualizing a future that aligns with your true self can be incredibly powerful. It reminds you that the life you want is worth working toward—and that you deserve joy and peace.

No matter what this season looks like for you, remember that your journey is valid, and your experiences matter. You deserve peace, affirmation, and a holiday that feels right for you. Whether you’re reconnecting with old traditions, forging new ones with your chosen family, or simply finding small ways to honor your identity, know that you are not alone.

Take it one moment at a time, be gentle with yourself, and celebrate every bit of progress and strength. And if it feels tough, remind yourself: you are worthy of joy today, tomorrow, and always.
