Plume Clinic vs. FOLX Health

Plume Clinic and FOLX both offer gender-affirming care for transgender and gender-diverse adults, including telehealth access and licensed clinicians. For many patients, either provider could meet their basic needs.

The key difference isn’t access – it’s how care is structured, how often you’re supported, and how predictable your costs are over time.

At a high level:

  • Plume is designed to be all-inclusive and predictable
  • FOLX is designed to be modular and pay-as-you-go

That distinction matters most once you begin receiving care.

*New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island legally require patients to pay for their lab costs. To mitigate this out of pocket cost for quarterly labs, Plume has a lower price for NJ/NY/RI memberships at $90. We also have special discount pricing with LabCorp and Quest, so you typically pay around $30 for labs every quarter. This lower membership cost gives you the flexibility you need to pay for the labs without paying more.

A Difference in Pricing and Visit Structure

Plume Clinic operates on a flat monthly membership model that bundles care together. That membership includes:

  • Clinician visits
  • Routine follow-ups
  • Lab coordination and monitoring
  • Ongoing clinical messaging and support

Importantly, Plume patients can schedule up to five appointments per month with their provider at no additional cost. There are no per-visit fees or limits that trigger extra charges.

Even if a patient doesn’t schedule frequent appointments, Plume’s care model is built around regular, proactive check-ins. Clinicians routinely meet with patients every couple of months to review progress, discuss changes, and make adjustments as needed – all included in the membership price.

FOLX, by contrast, offers a lower base membership with separate charges for visits, labs, and other services. That structure gives patients flexibility, but it also means costs can change depending on how often you need care.

Scenario 1: You Want to Check In Often – Without Paying More

Some patients want (or need) more touchpoints:

  • Adjusting dosages
  • Talking through side effects
  • Checking in more during early months of hormone therapy
  • Revisiting goals as their transition evolves

With Plume, scheduling additional appointments doesn’t change your bill. Whether you meet once or multiple times in a month, your cost stays the same.

For patients who value access and reassurance – especially early in transition – this all-inclusive structure can remove the hesitation of asking, “Do I really need this visit, since I have to pay for it?”

Scenario 2: You Prefer Care That’s Proactive, Not Reactive

Plume’s model doesn’t rely on patients initiating every check-in. Even if you’re feeling stable, clinicians regularly reconnect with patients to:

  • Monitor progress
  • Review labs
  • Assess how treatment is feeling physically and emotionally

Because those check-ins are included, patients don’t have to weigh medical care against additional fees. The result is care that’s built around continuity, not just appointments when something feels wrong or “off”.

Florida Patients: Required In-Person Visits

Florida law requires adults seeking gender-affirming hormone therapy to complete an in-person informed consent visit before receiving or continuing care via telehealth.

Both providers comply with this requirement:

  • Plume Clinic charges a $35 informed consent fee for the required in-person visit in Florida.
  • FOLX charges approximately $50 for the required in-person visit for Florida patients.

After that visit, ongoing care with either provider typically continues virtually. For Florida patients, Plume offers a lower upfront cost to meet this legal requirement, followed by an all-inclusive care structure.

So, Which Is Right for You?

Both Plume Clinic and FOLX provide affirming, legitimate care – but they’re designed for different priorities.

Plume Clinic may be the better fit if you value:

  • Predictable monthly costs
  • An all-inclusive membership
  • Frequent or proactive provider check-ins
  • Up to five included appointments per month
  • Fewer decisions about whether care is “worth the cost”

There’s no single best choice – only the one that aligns with how you want care to feel.

Plume’s approach is designed for patients who want gender-affirming care to be steady, inclusive, and financially predictable, with access built in, not added on.
